Bug Description

Binary package hint: network-manager

Since last Intrepid complete update (2008-10-08) all the web-browsers I have on the system start in Offline mode. At first look I thought that It was a Firefox bug, but It occurs the same on Ephiphany browser and It makes me think that the problem is (maybe) with network-manager

in firefox you can go to about:config then filter results to 'network.online' and set it to true.

Hi all,
I am afflicted with this bug. I will be using firefox as my main test-bed.

@ Eric Jansen, about:config > network.online: true is there from before. I didn't need to toggle it.

@Mackenzie Morgan :- The network-manager says I'm not online even though I'm.

This might be a dupe of #191889 but let the OP answer the questions given, mine is that, will try the workaround.

If you connect by a method other than Network Manager, you are experiencing bug 191889. If you connected with network manager and are *still* getting "offline mode" you have a new bug.

@Mackenzie Morgan :- The network-manager says I'm not online even
though I'm (like shirish)

And I think it's a new bug because I connect with network manager and I'm
*still* getting "offline mode"

Mackenzie I'm not sure if I connect with NetworkManager or not, I actually connect through my router.

This is my /etc/network/interfaces file

 cat /etc/network/interfaces
# This file describes the network interfaces available on your system
# and how to activate them. For more information, see interfaces(5).

# The loopback network interface
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

# The primary network interface
auto eth0
iface eth0 inet static
address 192.168.1.2
netmask 255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.1.1

Any help/guidance/comments appreciated.

Are you using a static IP configured through the manual method in NM or
are you just clicking a network out of the dropdown?

applet will still show "not connected" if all your devices are unmanaged. but NM will tell apps like browser that you are online. which is the original bug here.

Mackenzie, I have tried both ways, whenever I try to put static NM makes my netmask 24 instead of 255.255.255.0 . So right now using dhclient . NM also shows the same, although it shows for both eth0 & eth1 while only eth0 is connected.

Shirish Agarwal (shirishag75) wrote :

hence now its all dhclient, any idea how to stop the dhclient and try this way?

Btw this is when it boots up

CIDR /24 syntax and 255.255.255.0 are the same thing.

What do you mean by "NM also shows the same, although it shows for both eth0 & eth1 while only eth0 is connected."?

Try this:
1. Connect using NM
2. Start Firefox
3. Is it in Offline Mode?
