Bug Description

Tested the new fglrx 2:8.543-0ubuntu1 on Intrepid daily-live 10/15/2008. Module fglrx fails to load on a Radeon 9500pro.

Steps to reproduce:
- Boot with "text" kernel option (to avoid loading the possibly conflicting radeon module)
- Enable repositories, install xorg-driver-fglrx (no errors reported, dkms module installed)
- Try aticonfig --initial that segfaults:
    aticonfig[10483]: segfault at c ip 080539fd sp bf8e5910 error 6 in aticonfig[8048000+34000]
- Edit xorg.conf adding Driver "fglrx" under Device (the rest of the file is unmodified)
- Try modprobe fglrx that fails:
FATAL: Error inserting fglrx (/lib/modules/2.6.27-7-generic/updates/dkms/fglrx.ko): Cannot allocate memory

X does not start either complaining that there is no matching Device section for my card, but that's a different bug (it looks like an explicit BusID is now required by fglrx).

I can confirm that, as I am affected by the exact same issue. I'm also using a board with an R300 chipset.

Several other users have reported similar experiences in the "fglrx works!!"-thread at ubuntuforums.com (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=5968595#post5968595).

sadly I must admit that my notebook also affected by this bug. Today I decided to give intrepid beta a try... after upgrade and reboot I ended up with console. In kernel.log I can see messages like "error inserting fglrx ...[path_here]... Cannot allocate memory" when manually run modprobe fglrx

Me too! On a Mobility Radeon 9700.

After reading about an X Server 1.5 compatible fglrx beta being available in Intrepid, I finally ugraded my system (I always do a few weeks before the official launch). Stupid me. How could I *not* assume that ATI would mess up support for my Mobility Radeon?

So it is sounding like this regression is only happening on the
mobility 9XXx cards. IA this a corect assertion, or has anyone seen
this on other cards?

Stefano,
Okay, still in the 9xxx cards however. Appearing to at least be
problems with these asics.

Yesterday, 20081020, just to give a try I update 7.04 to intrepid beta and fglrx showed the same problem reported in these follow-ups, too. I tried to use the OS driver (ati), and it does not work either.

And? What happens next? Will someone from Ubuntu call ATI or will we have to wait till november?

You can use ATI open-source driver, but You should completely remove fglrx
driver.
They have some overlapping files and fglrx driver replaces ati driver files.
So You should just do the followinf things:
1. sudo apt-get remove --purge fglrx*
2. sudo apt-get remove --purge xserver-xorg-video-ati
xserver-xorg-video-radeon
3. sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-ati

That's all. In my case it helped (ATI mobility radeon 9600)
Good luck.

Oh Boy, I hope it wont last for 21 months like the XVideo-on-tv-out-bug some time ago. Does anyone important even read these bug reports?

Yeah, I was afraid of that. Last time there was a showstopper bug in the driver, it took them two years to fix it.
