Bug Description

Since Intrepid, I notice that the GNOME preferences for left-handed mouse are ignored, after resuming from a sleep or hibernation. This is a regression from previous releases.

The link to the GNOME Bugzilla points to a similar bug for which a patch has been submitted.

This is only showstopper bug left in Intrepid before I can safely upgrade all my computers from Hardy.

FWIW, I just installed 2.24.0-0ubuntu4~wgrant1 as a test and found that it doesn't restore the left-handed setting after resume.

Try ~wgrant2. Make sure you restart gnome-settings-daemon afterwards...

I just did. No improvement. I think that the main difference with the duplicate bug is that no device has been removed or inserted, in my case, so there's no new device to match to a driver or preference, since the exact same device is there after operation is resumed from sleep/hibernate. Perhaps the real trick would be to make g-s-d aware of when *it* has been resumed, so that it rescans all hardware upon being restored? Or have I misunderstood and this is that what this patch is already supposed to do?

Erm. I need an Xorg.0.log from before and after suspend. Also check if setting the button map manually after resuming fixes it.

Going back to GNOME's mouse preference, then manually selecting right-handed, then left-handed again indeed fixes it. Of course, it requires the mental gymnastic of using the wrong button to get to that configuration menu. It also does nothing to automatically restore left-handed after resuming.

You didn't use the distupgrader, did you? There appears to be cruft in your xorg.conf; try running without it. That will be stuffing with hal.

The upgrade was performed using 'aptitude'. As to whether maintainer scripts for xserver-xorg are capable of handling migration from X 1.4 (Hardy) to X 1.5 (Intrepid), I wouldn't know. IF they cannot, they definitely should. FYI, that xorg.conf is what I got from a clean install of Hardy, immediately followed by a dist-upgrade.

Running without xorg.conf did not solve it either. This is using whatever is current in the wgrant PPA.

We discussed this on IRC, and it appears that it does in fact work.

The maintainer scripts should not necessarily be handling this transition; upgrading via apt-get or aptitude has not been supported for years.

Not quite. It works at random. I cannot consider this fixed.

2.24.0-0ubuntu3.2 indeed works on Intrepid. Thanks!

On Jaunty, .xsession-errors shows:

gnome-mouse-properties: symbol lookup error: gnome-mouse-properties: undefined symbol: XGetDeviceProperty

libxi accidentally got itself synced; it has been fixed now, so upgrade
and try again.

Confirmed. Fixed again since the latest x11-* packages were pushed into Jaunty.
