Bug Description

I am using the most recent version of nautilus from Dapper - since doing an upgrade on 2006/01/17, I no longer see my iPod and network mounts on the desktop. They are in the Places menu.

Thanks for your bug. What are the values of the gconf keys /apps/nautilus/desktop/network_icon_visible and /apps/nautilus/desktop/volumes_visible? You can get them with gconf-editor

They were false, but I never changed them! Are these new keys?

I set volumes_visible to true and now they show up.

I searched for desktop in gconf-editor (now and before) and found various entries but not these keys. I guess I'll have to log a bug for gconf-editor.

Many thanks.

The keys are new but should have a correct default. What value to it get if you unset it with gconf editor (it gets the system default when you do that)?

If you do a gconf-editor query on desktop that's normal that you don't get that one since desktop is not a part of the key name but of its path

I only changed the keys to true after your comments. So, the defaults in my case were not correct.

Thanks!

maybe they get changing by something, could you try what I asked before to know what the default are?

right-clicked on each key and selected "unset key" - the icons are not visible now.

I think hiding the volumes on desktop is indeed the default (happened to me as well). That's just an /apps/nautilus/desktop GConf key to set to "true" by default.

One reason why we should let these icons appear on the desktop is unmounting. You can't unmount volumes from the "Places" menu, so hiding the desktop icons would imply adding the disk-mounter applet in the default panel layout. I think showing them on the desktop is a better option.

Another reason is that users plugging some device in their computer will probably wait for something to happen, and may not want to look into the Places menu to see that.

I agree. As discussed recently on the -devel mailing list, it's pretty essential to have either (a) drives on the desktop by default or (b) an unmounting applet in the panel by default, for the reason given by Manu. Please restore this behaviour!

I used to see a vfat mountpoint on my desktop, even setting the /apps/nautilus/desktop/volumes_visible key didn't bring back this icon.

That icon was useful because it was used to share files between linux and windows. It was on every save and open dialog sidepane.

on my up2date dapper, the places menu also doesn't show my optical drives anymore. they're now only accessible under 'computer'.
and my ntfs mounts dont show up anymore, their only accessible through filesystem > media

in breezy, everything that was in fstab and mounted in /media would be visible on the desktop which was a _good_ thing, now it's complicated.

In Ubuntu Dapper Flight 4
I see on desktop no flash drive, no mounted FAT32 partition. It's annoying.

Wow. I don't think this has been an issue in Dapper for quite a while. This bug should have died ages ago.
