Bug Description

Description: Ubuntu 8.10
Release: 8.10

What I expected to happen:

When I try to lower the backlight brightness via brightness applet or brightness keys on the keyboard the screen brightness should lower.

What happened instead:

Though there is a graphical indication that the setting was changed the brightness stays full ( which drastically reduces battery life ).

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Unfortunately we can't fix it without more information.

Please include the following additional information, if you have not already done so (pay attention to lspci's additional options), as required by the Ubuntu Kernel Team:
1. Please include the output of the command "uname -a" in your next response. It should be one, long line of text which includes the exact kernel version you're running, as well as the CPU architecture.
2. Please run the command "dmesg > dmesg.log" after a fresh boot and attach the resulting file "dmesg.log" to this bug report.
3. Please run the command "sudo lspci -vvnn > lspci-vvnn.log" and attach the resulting file "lspci-vvnn.log" to this bug report.

For your reference, the full description of procedures for kernel-related bug reports is available at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies Thanks in advance!

Jordan - Thanks for adding the logs, passing this on to the kernel team.

Eagle Knight - Please repost that info as a separate bug, be sure to include your make of laptop in the title. This may turn out to be caused by the same bug but best to make a separate report until we can be sure, thanks.

Per a decision made by the Ubuntu Kernel Team, bugs will longer be assigned to the ubuntu-kernel-team in Launchpad as part of the bug triage process. The ubuntu-kernel-team is being unassigned from this bug report. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies for more information. Thanks.

On an IBM Thinkpad, I'm experiencing this same problem. It might be a kernel issue, because I did not experience this with the linux kernel 2.6.27-9, as far as I remember. There is a graphical display of the brightness being lowered, but the brightness does not actually lower--it doesn't make a difference if I try via the screen brightness applet or the hardware keys, the effect is the same, brightness is on the highest level. This is a serious issue as I rely on my laptop's battery life. Lenovo Thinkpad X61 Tablet, running Ubuntu Intrepid, all forms of updates (backports, proposed, etc) enabled.

It's definitely a kernel issue. I just installed the previous kernel version (2.6.27-10, was using 2.6.27-11), and the screen brightness keys are working perfectly, with the screen brightness actually lowering. If more information is needed, I would be ready to give it :)

Same issue with Lenovo X61; brightness does not work in 2.6.27-11, but works if I boot with 2.6.27-9 kernel.

If you need more info, please request it.

I seem to have the same problem with my Samsung P560 laptop.

When I press Fn-up or Fn-down there is an indication that the brightness-level is changed, but it doesn't.
When I try to use the hal-system-lcd-get-brightness script I get: 10: hal-functions : not found

I used to change the brightness level via a self written script by writing to the file /proc/acpi/video/NVID/LCD/brightness, but this file vanished a while ago, together with the NVID directory. It was just gone, from one day to the next :(

I think that this bug probably has something to do with the missing brightness file (at least in my case)

side note: when booting wth 2.6.27-7 the brightness file is there, if i boot with 2.6.27-11 it isn't.

I can work around this bug by adding the kernel parameter "acpi_backlight=vendor" which leads me to believe that this bug is a regression caused by the fix for LP#311716 .
