synaptic package manager will not work.

Bug Description

synaptic package will not work. i expected to work as normal but an error came up telling you to report the problem. I am using ubuntu 8.04 hardy heron.

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible, in this case the error message produced).
