[intrepid] Serial mouse not detected when using USB adapter

Bug #295983 reported by xteejx

Bug Description

When I use Windows, it automatically installs the drivers for my USB to Serial mouse adapter. I can't seem to find the driver for Ubuntu.
I use a special mouse due to my physical limitations and a regular USB mouse is useless to me.
I'm new to this OS so you have to go step-by-step.

Hi ManBoy,
Can you answer the following to help in solving this problem:
What brand and model is your mouse?
What mechanism does your mouse use: ball mouse, optical, trackball, ...
How many physical buttons and scrollwheels does you mouse have?

Also can you open a terminal/console and enter the following commands :
uname -a > ~/uname-a
cat /proc/version_signature > ~/version_signature
sudo lspci -vvnn > ~/lspci-vvnn
dmesg > ~/dmesg
and then attach the files that are in your home folder (uname-a, version_signature, lspci-vvnn and dmesg) and also the file /var/log/Xorg.0.log
Thank you.

Incap No model # (a german company think they stopped making my mouse)
SwitchMouse
9 buttons - no right click - 0 scroll wheels

You can press Alt+F1 to open the Applications on the top gnome bar, and then navigate from there to accessories>terminal. To be able to upload the files, same way to start firefox and tab through the pages to attach the required files. Long way around I know but the only way without a mouse.

Changed in xserver-xorg-input-mouse:
status: Incomplete → Confirmed

Hi ManBoy,
It seems this is a problem that currently will not be fixed, but for the moment there is a solution. Have a look at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SerialMouseHowto - all the info you need to get this working is there. This really should be fixed with a mouse searching facility in ubiquity, and if none is found, then it should ask if the mouse is serial. This is present in Mandriva apparently.
Hope it all works out OK, report back if not and we'll see where to go from there. Good luck!

Hi ManBoy,
I must point out, your best option on that page is probably to use the section "Configure Xserver (alternate method)" and when you get to the mouse part, apparently the port should be /ttyUSB0 or 1, 2, 3, 4 depending on which usb port it's on.

No, what you need is a serial mouse setting/checking utility, which is called
if no mouse is detected.

I can confirm, having installed Mandriva 2009.0 last month.

And it already existed when I began with Mandrake 6.1 over nine years ago, in
days when serial mice were more common.

Cheers,

Ron.
