Bug Description

When i boot Ubuntu ( dapper and breezy ) with the default nv driver, the only thing i can see are coloured dots, filling the whole screen. I can still move the mouse, which is now a little square, filled with the same dots. Keyboard doesn't do anything anymore, a hard reboot is the only thing i can do. When i boot into single mode, then install nvidia-glx and change the xorg.conf to load nvidia instead of nv as driver, it works fine.

Thanks in advance!

Yes, this happens to me too. Tried with some of the previous Ubuntu versions too, still happens. May someone tell me exactly how to avoid this with the driver thingie and the xorg config file.
Please fix this!

as a workaround, you can boot with 'single' added to your bootline, and then apt-get install nvidia-glx, and changing Driver "nv" into Driver "nvidia" and then rebooting. This will use the official nvidia drivers instead of the opensource ones, who are causing the trouble.

Hi.
I have too a 6600GT(AGP) and installed kubuntu on my box but :
The 6.06LTS cd is not usable in native resolution (1280x1024). X is usable in 1024x768 resolution so it has to be specified at boot time. I had later a problem with mouse cursor chich didn't appeared, the fact that mouse makes buttons move when hover helps a lot for install. If you're blind without X, you try the vesa driver instead of nv, worked well for me.

Edgy Beta1: The screen is no longer distorted as in Dapper with nv driver, but i cannot see the mouse cursor.. After a few minutes, the whole system froze hard. After switching to the nvidia driver, everything works just great.

Screen is still distorted for me on Fiesty Herd. I have a eVGA 6600 LS (AGP). Though when trying OpenSuSE's Live DVD (v10.2) I did get the desktop with no mouse cursor that the previous poster got (though no system freeze).

First thing to try would be to set 'Option "HWCursor" "false"' in the Device-section. Upstream has similar reports where that helped.

Similar problem here on Gutsy with a 6600GT. The vesa works fine but the nv driver gives a corrupt screen. I have to boot into rescue mode and edit xorg.conf to use vesa instead.

Timo,

The HWCursor option solved the problem for me.

Sorry about the incorrect application of the Milestone. I saw the ATI one of the same milestone and figured if it wouldn't hurt to have a matching nVidia one.

Is there anything in particular that needs to be done to get future Live CD's to detect the offending models and set that option? I haven't looked into how Ubuntu generates its xorg.conf file on boot yet. Though I suppose if 8.04 uses the new conf-free Xorg I've been hearing about I guess it would need to use whatever that new method entails.

This problem is still persistent in the Hardy Alpha 2 and safe mode (which has worked since sometime after Dapper) also now fails to work.

Sounds like we need a quirk for this 6600 card. Can someone with this card post the output of 'lspci' so we can see what PCI ID to quirk?

I have a 6600gt, but what exact steps do I need to take to replicate this bug? I've never seen this behavior before.

I do not believe this affects the GT series. My friend has GT version of my card (same manufacturer) and has no problems. My card however does not work unless I force X to vesa mode (or install the nvidia drivers). Same problem in Debian too.

Booting off the Intrepid release Live CD, X came up just fine. Xorg logfile shows my video card did not have known PCI ID so the vesa driver was used instead of nv.

That's what I wanted so I think this bug can be called fixed.
