Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager

I've got a HP EliteBook 8730w: http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/us/en/sm/WF06a/321957-321957-64295-3740645-3329741-3784202.html

The problem is Ubuntu won't detect when I'm running on battery, or even that I have one. I've activated the option to always show power mode in the notification area, but it always shows that the laptop is running on AC power even when it isn't.

I can't even do "cat /proc/acpi/battery/BAT0/state" since it freezes my entire system. I can however do "cat /proc/acpi/battery/*/state" for some reason:

$ cat /proc/acpi/battery/*/state
cat: /proc/acpi/battery/BAT0/state: No such device
present: no

Attaching output of "dmesg", and below is the output of "lspci -vv":

Another thing worth noting happened when I tried to hibernate. The screen went blank as expected but stayed blank. I waited 3 mins or so before finally pressing the power button. When I booted again I got a blinking cursor and nothing else, so I restarted the system. This log is from that last restart.

Thanks for reporting this bug and any supporting documentation. Since this bug has enough information provided for a developer to begin work, I'm going to mark it as Triaged and let them handle it from here.

If you could also attach the output of
   cat /proc/version_signature > version.log
that would be great.

I will assign this bug to the Ubuntu Kernel ACPI Team

Thanks for taking the time to make Ubuntu better!

Hi,
I have a similar problem with my Toshiba Satellite Pro 4300 Laptop
I did a clean installation of Ubuntu 9.04, including getting any automatic updates and everything seems to work apart from the battery status. It only shows AC power settings, no settings for battery as though it was a desktop computer.
After that I did a clean installation of version 8.10 and it worked correctly and have been using that no problem.
With version 9.10 coming out I thought I would give that a go, but have the same problem.
I updated the BIOS (BIOFC30T.COM) and this is dated 2001.
I have attached the log files from the 9.10 installation
Any help would be appriciated, but please put in simple terms for someone who is used to windows.
Thanks
Keith
