Bug Description

Binary package hint: cups

In Kubuntu 8.10 Intrepid with cups 1.3.9-2ubuntu4:
When entering the web admin module and trying to modify printer properties the web admin module prompts for a username and password as it ought to. However, when the credentials are passed, instead of letting me update it either prompts for a username and password again or fails to authenticate the user with a 401 error.
Strangely by looking into the log it appears as if I am sending blank credentials. I certainly am not, I am trying to authenticate as root.
The only possibly unusual thing about this server is that it also uses an ebox LDAP user system along with the standard unix authentication.

I have attached the related error log.

In Ubuntu by default there is no root password defined. If you did not define one, you have to give the credentials of a user in the "lpadmin" group. The first user which Ubuntu creates on installation is in the "lpadmin" group.

This can also be a bug of LDAP. Please check appropriate log files.

Do you still have problems with this? Thanks.

@Till: I have set the root password on this box. It is my server and I need true root access for some things. Although I have tried my account which also has sudo and lpadmin rights. It could be an openldap problem, but not directly with openldap. It seems like the web system gets stuck authenticating against LDAP, fails and gives up instead of trying unix authentication or it could be PAM failing. I will try to get LDAP and PAM authentication logs ASAP.
@Paul: Yes, all systems are fully upgraded to the latest versions and I am still having authentication issues.

Since this report have a long time without activity, please could you check (if is possible) in latest version included in Karmic if this issue is still happening? Thanks in advance.

It seems to be resolved by replacing the cups configuration with the default files. Then you need to log into the web administration system as a user with sufficient rights on the box. It seems to make updates you should probably use the user that has sudo and/or lpadmin rights. In my case, the user which was in LDAP also has sudo and lpadmin rights and that user can log into the web cups admin and make changes.
