Drag and Drop Behavior

Bug Description

There are some aspects of the "Drag and Drop" behavior in GNOME that are very annoying.
Many times, when clicking on an object and moving the mouse quickly, it will be attached to the cursor (using the not-so-appealing document icon appended to the cursor theme), even while you are not holding the mouse button down. If you are not holding down the mouse button, there should be no drag actions. I often times find myself with an object attached to my cursor without any easy solution to get it off. I see this a lot in mozilla-thunderbird, when scanning through messages (click, move, click, move). I also see this a lot when dealing with menu entires. As a click on an icon and move the mouse, the shortcut is appended to my cursor even while I am not clicking the mouse.
Less importantly, instead of appending a not-so-attractive document icon to the cursor, would it be a better solution to add a document cursor while dragging to the cursor theme?

Thanks for your bug. Is that specific to nautilus (you opened the bug on it)? What version of Ubuntu do you use? That could be an issue with your mouse or xorg. Do you have an easy way to reproduce it?

This isn't an issue with nautilus, it seems like an issue with any GNOME applications. I've been experiancing this annoyance from Warty to Dapper.
I took a look at my mouse actions using the xev event tester, and the ButtonRelease actions were happening just fine.

There is an easy way to reproduce it. Click on a menu item in the Applications menu (Take gedit for example) and quickly move your mouse away. The drag cursor will appear and there will be no apparent way to get rid of the object being dragged. There should never be an object attatched to the cursor when the mouse button is not held down.

I posted a thread to the mailing list, and I've received many replies of users who have experiacned this same bug

Clicking and moving fast starts gedit, close the bug and gives a clock cursor while gedit starts then a normal one for me. Seems that you get an xorg event issue to me

This is not an X event problem. I have no problems in KDE, and after thorough testing of xev, everything seemed normal on the X side.

This happen to me,too. I use a synaptic touchpad. I can confirm that it happens with the menu entries, but not with regular icons
