Severity: normal
Followup-For: Bug #221692

There is now version 1.1.10. It is quite useful for many of us because
it includes a "low graphics" mode for slower CPUs.

Also, there is music and sound for crack-attack available at

http://www.miguev.net/phpwiki/index.php/crack-attack-miguev-v05.diff

Some other distributions are now including the crack-attack music and
sound, perhaps you could either include it with crack-attack or make a
separate package for those?

retitle 221692 Sounds and music patch available
thanks

The new version has been uploaded, but that URL for the patch is dead.
Google's cache had it, but it looked incomplete (patched only configure)
and had no copyright statement (well, if that was all of it then fine,
it had (modified) a copyright statement for configure, but otherwise...)

As soon as there is a complete copy with a copyright statement, I'll
apply it.

The files in their entirety can be found here: http://www.miguev.net/misc/

The first 75% of the diff is the configure script, but the rest does have an
actual patch to add sound playing and such.

There used to be a webpage describing the patch, but that seems to have
disappeared now. The sounds were taken from Breakout, and I don't remember where
the music came from.

As for a copyright statement, I didn't see anything on that. miquev.net is still
an active website, but I can't read the native language -- Spanish I believe --
well enough to find contact information.

If anybody can get me the contact information I'm willing to make contact and
get a clear copyright statement and sources of the sounds/music.

Hi,

the new version 1.1.14, available at
 http://www.nongnu.org/crack-attack/
includes the patch, but no sound files, because no-one made `official'
ones ;)

It also offers a new-designed GUI.

best regards,

Crack Attack 1.1.14-1 was uploaded yesterday, so according to the information
on this bug the patch is in Debian. That just leaves the data. Someone
mentioned Breakout as a source, obviously it could be copyrighted then. Anyway
if someone can get some music and/or sounds that we can distribute, then
depending on the size and license of such data, I will happily put it in the
crack-attack package or a separate crack-attack-sound package or something
(non-free if necessary). Andrew, if you could ask the author of the site in
question where we might get the necessary information (license etc), that would
be appreciated.

Crack Attack needs to be rebuilt with --enable-sound for sound and music to
be used - the configure script's help text is lying about it being enabled by
default.

Suffice it to say that, with that done, the sound & music works quite nicely.

retitle 221692 Needs free sounds and music
tags 221692 +upstream
thanks

Just to correct the title of this bug: miguev's downloads were available
just now, which they weren't last time I looked, so I have a copy of
these sound files now. They have no license though, just the files, so I
cannot upload them to Debian. If indeed they are from Breakout or
another commercial game as a previous commenter suggested, I am unlikely
ever to be able to do so.

Also tagging this upstream since the need for free data (the preferred
solution to this bug) is noted on http://www.nongnu.org/crack-attack/

Also, just to confirm: the current package of crack-attack *does* play
sounds and music if placed under these filenames:

/usr/share/games/crack-attack/sounds:
block_awaking.wav block_fallen.wav garbage_fallen.wav

StefanPotyra (sistpoty) wrote :

Hm... according to debian #221692, there are no copyright statements for the sound-files (and eventually the sounds are taken from a commercial app). Thus, we unfortunately cannot distribute these sounds. However as stated in the debian bug, you can put sound-files to the following locations:

/usr/share/games/crack-attack/music:
game.ogg gameover.ogg prelude.ogg youwin.ogg

/usr/share/games/crack-attack/sounds:
block_awaking.wav block_fallen.wav garbage_fallen.wav
block_dying.wav countdown.wav garbage_shattering.wav

In case you have free sounds (either made by you or taken from another package *with* copyright statements that state, that these are free), it might be a good idea to forward these to the crack-attack authors.

Hi all,

Sorry for all these (7) years of silence since I released that patch for adding sound and music to Crack Attack!

I recently took the time to put together what I recalled and check how things are right now, see details in this (a bit long) post:

http://miguev.net/blog/en/2010/09/02/audio-support-for-crack-attack/

In short:
- I took sound effects from GL-117 and LBreakout2, both of which are released under GNU GPL.
- I used to take any music at hand, didn't find any redistributable music that would suit.
- I hope you can either (a) bundle sound effects in one package or (b) create a metapackage that depends on gl-117-data and lbreakout2-data and post-install adds symlinks to /usr/share/crack-attack/sounds/
- I wouldn't spend much time about the music, just add sound effects and leave people choose their music.

I've notified https://savannah.nongnu.org/task/?3487 as well, not sure how to notify http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=221692 though, so feel free to copy, paste and spread my words.
