This was marked as a dublicate of bug 10435, however it is NOT. Bug 10435 is about creating a Templates folder as default and that bug is fixed.

This bug is about adding default templates to the templatesfolder, a bug that still exists in Intrepid.

To quote someone at the forums:
"Would someone please explain what I am supposed to do wih this essential folder? I read the bugreport and learned that it would confuse people coming from Windows if it wasn't present. Now I am confused."

Simply creating an empty folders with no apparent use is a really bad idea. This bug can be fixed in two ways:

1. Remove the Templates folder so that it is not confusing users

2. Add default Templates to the Templatesfolder

I can confirm this bug as I was the one ending up confused and asking for the use of this folder at the forum. Having this folder was important enough for a bugreport that was confirmed and finally a fix was released, so I became curious.

Now that I got the idea I tried to put some templates in on my own and having these templates present by just using the right mouse button to create a new document of a particular type is a nice feature. I believe providing some sample templates would make things clear, although this should probably be done with translation of self explaining default filenames in mind.

According to Persia at #ubuntu-bugs this would be a good approach:

The issue is that templates tend to be in user folders. If you want to fix that bug, I recommend creating a blueprint for a structure by which there can be system installed templates in Nautilus (may exist already : I haven't investigated), and file bugs against packages that have document formats to have them provide templates to this system location, linked to the blueprint.
