this is soundcard info

card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], unit 0: STAC92xx Analog [STAC92xx Analog]

00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 03)
        Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company Device 30f4
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 22

        Capabilities: <access denied>
Kernel driver in use: HDA Intel

and the way i made it work was adding this to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base

alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel

Changing the affected package to 'linux' per the instructions here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingSoundProblems

Additionally, I am updating the status to Confirmed because I am able to reproduce this (i also have a dv7 but with Ubuntu 9.04 installed, not kubuntu) and the reporter's fix provided works to successfully resolve the issue.

affects: alsa-driver (Ubuntu) → linux (Ubuntu)

For clarification, I'm not sure if kubuntu is different (doubtful), but the file I had to edit was /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf not /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base

Seems this may be a known issue and has been fixed. If you'd like to test, please refer to the instructions mentioned in the link above. Alternatively you can also try running the latest Karmic kernel or try the most recent mainline kernel build, 2.6.30-rc8 - https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds which should also contain the updated patches. Please let us know your results.

If this is still an issue even after testing, please run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information:

apport-collect -p alsa-base 326896

I am unassigning this bug from the Ubuntu Audio Team as bug assignment is something that should be taken and generally not given. Additionally, the Ubuntu Audio Team has changed their policy to conform with the norm.

Leann,

The community doc steps to install the alsa-driver snapshot from source do seem to resolve the issue, although I still can't get audio input working (but that's a separate issue).

I am reverting the status change to "Fix Committed", as according to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Status, "Fix Committed" on an ubuntu package bugtask indicates the fix is part of an upload that is being prepared and will soon be uploaded - not simply that the fix is present in an upstream snapshot.

status: Fix Committed → Confirmed

Changing to Fix Released as this should be available with the latest Karmic 9.10 Alpha release - http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/karmic/
