Bug Description

needs-packaging

Add this firefox addon as default: https://addons.mozilla.org/sv-SE/firefox/addon/718 . This is particularly useful for researchers which then can directly type doi-adresses in the URL-field, eg. doi:10.1038/nature06580

Thank you for your suggestion. However, the changes you are requesting aren't really a bug and require more discussion, which should be done on an appropriate mailing list or forum. http://www.ubuntu.com/support/community/mailinglists might be a good start for determining which mailing list to use.

made a needs-packaging bug out of it and filed against the firefox-extensions project which we use to track packaging requests.

what license does DOI have? do they include a license in the .xpi? are they shipping binary components (e.g. *.so files)?

Changed in firefox-extensions:
importance: Undecided → Wishlist
status: New → Incomplete

This will not be added as default extension, This is a bad idea.
There are several reasons why addons/plug-ins are not included by
default, off hand here are a few.
1. Slows down Firefox
2. Not everyone wants extensions installed when installing firefox.
3. Hard to diagnose problems in the extension

Please add this extensions and any info you have on it to:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MozillaTeam/Extensions/List
We go over this list and move forward on them when we get a chance.
If you feel like packaging it than feel free to add it to the first
block of extensions, If not please add it to either "needs maintainer"
or "missing information"
Any if you you leave out we can find, It is best to leave us all info at
hand so that is one less thing the packager has to spend time looking for.

Is that license block in the top leave directory of the .xpi?

Since I am not the author I cannot give much more information about this. A general note is however that I think this actually should be a core competence of Firefox, i.e. , be able to interpret DOI adresses since it is a standardised way of addressing archived articles on the net.

I understand why you think this is a good idea, However hardcoding and
extension into Firefox isn't a good idea, for a number of reasons one
being the stablity of the end product. The only way this will happen is
from upstream. Please file a bug upstream maybe they will come to a
middle ground.
Once you file an upstream bug please give us the link here.
There is nothing we can do on our end except package the extension as we
do with others.
