Panel volume does not close when clicking on desktop or elsewhere.

Bug Description

Ubuntu 8.10 64 bit

Clicking on the panel volume icon brings up the volume control.
Clicking on the desktop, active windows or other areas of the screen should close the volume control automatically.
This doesn't occur. Instead I need to click on the panel volume icon a second time to close the volume control.

I actually submitted this idea to brainstorm first. A moderator however demmed it a bug and suggested that I post it here.
What should I do now?
