Bug Description

I enabled the "External Tool" plug-in in Gedit, and I am having problems with it.

1) Go to Tools -> External Tools
2) Click on "New", to create a new action.
3) Click in the "Accelerator" field, it now invites you to type your keyboard short-cut
4) Type a short-cut, for example "Control + F6"

Result : nothing happens.

Update: It's not all that broken it seems. Not all accelerators don't work, only some of them. Of course at first I precisely happened to want the ones that didn't work, hence I assumed none of them worked... but it's not that bad.

What doesn't work: Control + F6, Control + F7, Control + F8, Control + F12.

These shortcuts are not used by Gnome or anything, so they should be available, no idea what's wrong.

Could you try with the Snippets plugin to see wheter it is also affected or not ? (I think both plugins share the same code but I'm not sure) Thanks.

I've reported the bug into gnome bugzilla (http://bugs.gnome.org/334222). I'll have a look at it asap.

Hi,

Okay, I just installed and tried the snipped plug-in... it's even worse !
That is, I tried all the combinations from Control + F1 through to Control + F12, and NONE of them work.
I tried Control + <any key but a Fn key> and it works fine.
So somehow, it must have problems with the functions keys...

When you say it doesn't work, is the shortcut not listed by the field after pressing it or it is listed but doesn't do the action when using gedit?

It's the former: I click in the "accelerator" filed, then it reads "type a new accelerator", then I hit for example contrl + F6, and nothing happens, it doesn't react in anyway, as if I hadn't pressed any key at all.

What keyboard configuration do you use (gconftool-2 -R /desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/kbd)?

Attached.
I didn't touch it though, I only selected French keyboard when installing Dapper, and that's about it.

Also, I noticed sometihng interesting (which might rule X out):

I created a new user, to get a "fresh" starting point. And noticed that Control+ F6/F7/F8 DO work, but not Control+F12.

So it's better than my own user, but not quite 100%.

Could you tell me if you already use the same key without modificator ?

I mean, when Ctrl+F8 fails, is F8 already used ?

Yes, I use F6, F7 and F8, to control Rhythmbox.
However if I delete these short-cuts, it doesn't improve things.
Also, the Control+F12 doesn't work, and I have no shortcut that uses F12.

marking as unconfirmed, that works fine for me, if somebody gets the issue and want to work with upstream to fix it he's welcome

not sure of why you close most of your bugs but letting that one closed because it would required somebody having the issue to work with upstream

I have not closed all my bugs (actually just re-opened one, and am currently filing a new one :-), far from that: I still have 80 or so bugs still open. I only closed a very few of them, those that looked more or less hopeless, and for which nobody else was subscribed, to reduce the clutter in my own bug list, and help tidy up Malone, as it's rapidly becoming an oooocean of bugs. :-/

Ok, I'm letting closed those which are not likely to be worked soon then
