when setup to sis on xorg.conf, driver refuses to load. As vesa it works till 1280x768 after tweaking the refresh rates on xorg.conf but stripes plague the screen.

Same machine has problems (a Clevo M761S laptop) with the sis191 network controller and RTL8187B controller.

Please attach your X server configuration file (/etc/X11/xorg.conf) and X server log file (/var/log/Xorg.0.log) to the bug report as individual uncompressed file attachments using the "Attachment:" box below. Could you please also try to run without any /etc/X11/xorg.conf and let Xorg autodetect your display and video card? When you do please also attach the /var/log/Xorg.0.log from this attempt. Thanks in advance.

Since I reported this bug I had to change to Xubuntu 8.10 32-bit, where a sis display driver is available and working quite solidly, will try to get a little time post it on my site, I was already getting eyesight problems out of the vesa driver stripes and fed up of back and forth ctrl-alt-f7... My xorg.conf was the plain standard one with the modification I published in http://ajoliveira.com/ajoliveira/uk/software/xorg.php

This seems to be a kernel issue, the problem is in all Linux distros I know apart of the Brazilian Satux. Since long now there is no appropriate driver for sis (namely) 671/771 chipsets.

My cabled network connection is now working as well. The downside was that I had to install the server kernel in order to profit from full 4GB memory, but that was straightforward. RTL8187B problem seems intact.

i have same problem on a laptop
native resolution is 1440x900
after installing ubuntu, it starts with vesa driver and 800x600 maximum :/

sis driver causes X not starting at boot
i only could create a xorg.conf file and add several modelines into, to abtain a poor 1280x768 display

For long I have a complete set of ubuntu drivers on my site for this board with ful instructions, I just didn't compile the latest 32-bit driver, check:

or if anybody prefers it in Portuguese:

If somebody really needs the 32-bit driver for 9.10, I wil compile it, but the 9.04 one should work.

I maintain this bug open because I believe this driver should be a part of the kernel. Soon we will have to migrate to xorg 1.7, and the driver should be recompiled, again...
