Bug Description

Binary package hint: evolution-indicator

currently the evolution indicator constantly shows a little mail envelope on the panel. it should show this icon only if there is actually unread mail (like the old email notification icon does in the systray) and not waste my panel space permanently for no use. this bug goes hand in hand with Bug #332466, proper usability would be to not show an icon if all mail is read (or no unread mail is available, however you want to formulate that) and to bring up evo directly with a click on the envelope icon. all other implementations are simple duplications of the already available evolution entry in the tasklist.

This was also discovered in use case testing.

Test Case 5: Evolution window is not active, email received

    * Confirm that a notification appears when the email arrives
          o Confirmed
    * Confirm that an entry is added to the MI
          o Fail
    * Confirm that evolution does not come to the front
          o Confirmed
    * Confirm that when the entry is selected, the evolution window comes to the front
o There is no entry for the incoming message, but when selecting Evolution in the MI it does come to the front

one emphasis i like to add is the "no icon vs. icon visible" here.
the wikipage doesnt cover this ...
if i'm away from my computer i can see from the officedoor at a glance if the icon is there or not to tell me if mail arrived while i was away.
currently there is no case for "what to do while idling" on the wikipage and it would be nice if no panel space was occupied if no new mail arrived i.e. the icon wasnt shown at all.

This is by design. The messaging indicator appears every time a messaging application is active. Currently with Evolution, this doesn't allow for hiding the window, but other applications like Pidgin do. Special casing Evolution doesn't seem like a good idea.

i dont want to hide teh window, i just dont want my panel space wasted if there is no mail, like the original evo icon does which went through several years of usability reviews and through several iterations of fixes with regard to that. sadly the new indicator setup broke the original evolution messaging completely which imho is a huge regression, if the new indication cant work like the old one, please make sure the old one does not break, reopening and changing description.

No, it's doing something different. Please address all the issues that
I brought up in the previous comment on this bug. Changing it to behave
that way would be very inconsistent with the various other goals that
the messaging indicator has.

The behavior requested in this bug is the opposite of what is being implemented. See http://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/340366 for the intended behavior.

Note that the evolution problem identified seems to be http://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/342480, so perhaps this bug could be duped to that one.

you are aware that this behavior exactly copies the mail-notification applet that was moved to universe several releases ago ?
