which theme are were you using? does the same happens if you change the text with the gnome-appearance-properties capplet?

The theme was qtcurve. I'll try to make a test with gnome-appearance-properties as soon as I get to my machine.

I couldn't reproduce it using gnome-appearance-properties. Changing font using gnome-appearance-properties actually does nothing (i.e. the font doesn't change), but I guess it's a totally normal behavior for a qtcurve (it uses KDE's font settings as far as I know).
