Kubuntu Jaunty - System Monitor (ksysguard) showing different memory/cpu values and graphs than top

Bug Description

Binary package hint: ksysguard

Hi,
KDE 4 System monitor is showing wrong values of memory/cpu utilization in graphs under "System Load" tab.

For the memory and swap usage, 'top' command shows very high usage values, whereas ksysguard shows very less values.

For the cpu usage, the values shown in "Process Table" and "System Load" never match (even after multiplying the Process Table cpu % values by 2, to consider dual core) !

The wrong values in ksysguard are misleading to the user, since 'top' shows the correct usage.

Thanks a lot...

The previous one should be the graphs, sorry.

Hey Musthafa,

I am sorry to disappoint you, but we really don't see an error here.
The memory doesn't seem to be off much for most apps and a bit more for X, but in general it is what top spits out, so no issue to be spotted there.
As for the CPU values: a) technically a CPU load value changes every few nano seconds, so it is very much up to the application when to count the value b) when you are viewing the graphs, they will themselfs put some more load on the CPU, even if you click very fast between table and graphs, the actual tab switch puts extra load on the CPU, so the values will be quite different each time.

If you can show a bit more precise values where the memory is off a lot (X is not much accountable for, since virtually every application shares memory with X, and leaves a memory footprint in X's cached memory as well), please reopen this bug report and post the information.

For now I am closing this bug as invalid.

None the less, I wish you a very nice day and thank you for this report :)

Thanks Harald for the update.

Currently in my system, 'top' as well as 'free' commands show 1.5GB real memory usage, whereas 'KDE System Monitor' shows only 0.5GB usage. !!

I am confused as to which one should be relied upon for the real memory usage.

Could you please tell me which one can I rely upon for the memory usage?
All these years, I have been using 'top' & 'free' in the server machines and thats why I thought 'System Monitor' is showing wrong values.

I still feel that the usage values should be consistent across different tools/utilities.
