Bug Description

basically, i am thinking of a quake3 package for Ubuntu. Now that quake3 is opensource and all.

someone (with the skills, aka not me) should beable to make the quake3 source from http://icculus.org/quake3/
make it use the alsa sound engine and all that by default.

Also a quake3-data package, that basically, helps copy the required .pak files from the quake3 cd to the appropriate place.

Sorry for asking perhaps stupid questions, but how is the availablity
of free game content for it? (As far as Google could tell me, it is
only the game engine that has been GPL'ed).

You're right, there is no completely standalone Free game data for Quake 3.

However, this has been gotten around fairly simply before:

quake2 in contrib depends on quake2-data
quake2-data (also in contrib) presents a debconf question, allowing you
to download and use data files from the Quake 2 shareware, or install
the full data from a valid retail CD. Contrib is the right place for
this kind of software, and the use of an empty -data package with clever
debconf trickery (see: msttcorefonts) avoids the need for large non-free
chunks of data to reside on debian servers.

Hi, I was just wondering about the status of this ITP.

Has a suitable upstream source already been selected?

Are there any free or open source mods that don't depend on id
Software's content?

Or will you adopt a similar scheme to the quake2 debian packages?
(quake2/quake2-data in contrib)

I am currently creating a package for this, mainly because I did some
experimenting a couple of weeks ago with this.

Even though the game content is not available for free (beer, speech),
you can use the game content of a total conversion (e.g. UT) to compose
a working game.

The package is built and tested. Still need to clean up (build depends
etc).

The data file pkg is not yet done, but I tested by linking the pk3 files
from the official install.

Contact me for the binary package if interested. (or sources of course).

I've just finished my first version of the quake3 packages.

I use the debian configuration of Jamie Wilkinson <email address hidden>, and
adjusted it (thanks man, you saved me a bunch of work :) ). The structure
of the packages is otherwise the same.
  quake3
  quake3-data

In order not to break possibly official installs, the startup script is
q3a (instead of quake3).

The game can (like the quake2 packages) be run from disk and CDROM. The
game can be played with the official CD available (pk3 files) or with
the demo of the game.

Different wrt the quake2 version is that you need to install the point
release to play the shareware/demo version as the full game, due to a UI
change in the code.

I have some further cleaning up to do, but the packages seem currently
stable enough to be used. One thing I certainly have to check is the
latest versions of the files floating around the net, but the last ones
I seemed to be able to pick up were:
  - linuxq3ademo-1.11-6.x86.gz.sh
  - linuxq3apoint-1.32b-3.x86.run

Future (to be expected this week) improvements will include installation
of Quake3 Team Arena.

If anyone is interested in the packages for testing, using; send me a
mail and I'll pass the URI along where you can download them, I am kind
of hesitant to publish the URI directly (my poor machine ;) )

Since I haven't seen any replies and/or further mails after the initial
ITP from the package maintainer (with the ITP about 24h of id going
GPL), I wonder if the maintainer continued this project, in which case a
reply would be appreciated. If not, ... euhm, what next?

Hi Marc,

as you can see, I've closed the my ITP a few months(!) ago. I just had not
enough time to package q3. Please feel free to maintain the package -- I'm
interested in playing q3 too ;)

Kind regards

Bastian

Closed the original bug since I cloned it to two others (should have
done this only once): quake3 and quake3-data.

there is ongoing work in including ioquake3 properly in debian. Bruno Kleinert and Marc Leeman have working packages in an svn repository for ioquake3 ready, I suspect they work on ubuntu as well.

The current problem is that there is no free data for quake3, since ioquake3 is basically just the game engine and nothing more. I'm not quite sure about the current status of the installer for grabbing data from your quake3 cd. Check the pkg-games-devel maillinglist archives on alioth.debian.org

i forgot all about this bug =D

ok, so currently the quake3-data package works fine for grabbing the data from the cd. (built debians packages under ubuntu dapper & edgy) also the ioquake3 package works fine as well. upstream has finally branched into a stable branch and current.

i've personally updated the packages i've used from the 1.34 branch (svn 892). it works nicely. (this is still the current 1.34 branch)

hopefully this can make it into edgy+1. i'll get around to tidying my packages up (.orig.tar.gz & .diff.gz) someday.
