Hotkeys don't work anymore

Bug Description

Since a week or two, my multimediakeys stopped working, the ones on my notebook-keyboard as well those on my usb-logitech-keyboard.

Gnome-keybinding-properties recognises the keycodes when configuring the keybindings, but pressing the keys afterwards doesn't do anything.

Running /etc/acpi/mutebtn.sh, volupbtn.sh and voldownbtn.sh in a shell doesn't do anything either...

On the other hand, xev doesn't seem to recognize the different keys,
it's output is always like this, no matter what (multimedia)key I press:

Thanks for your bug. What version of Ubuntu do you use? What keyboard configuration (gconftool-2 -R /desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/kbd)? What actions are you trying to assign and to what keys do you assign them?

Bug confirmed on a Dell Inspiron 510m
OS: dapper dist-upgraded from breezy on 23-03-2006
gconftool output:
 layouts = [gb]
 model = pc105
 overrideSettings = false
 options = []

Note: bug found when trying to set music player keys.
I also found the following:
When you choose the same key multiple times it jumps between CONTROL+XF86AudioNext and CONTROL+0x46 with CONTROL+F4 appering the 1st time only.

The following was also found: if you selected ALT+c as the key and then selected another combination not involving 'c', the letter 'c' will NOT WORK ANYMORE. Not in any program. I had to restart GNOME to fix it.
I tried the same steps with other keys and had the same result.

Yes. Exactly the same problem as described above occurs on Edgy with the latest updates.

by GNOME capplet I'm assuming you mean in System->Preferences->Keyboard?

Generic 105 key (intl.) PC
with a United Kingdom layout.

I should add however that all my multi-media keys work (at least the default ones like volume up, down, mute, etc... ).
What doesn't work is if I try and set new ones (Play, Stop, Forward, etc ).

More details in comment #2. IE my 1st comment on this bug, which was made after my bug was marked a duplicate of this one (perhaps in error?)

I can confirm this on Feisty. Rhythmbox is erratic, and while amaroK used to capture the keys without focus, that fails now under GNOME. Under XFCE everything is good. (/me adds this to his list of complaints that gnome-settings-daemon takes control).

i have this problem too.
Ubuntu version - 11.10
keyboard set to UK
There are 9 hotkeys across top of keyboard, only web, mail and search buttons work.
If I try and add extra shortcut for say, help, it shows press shortcut key but does not respond to pressing the hotkey with the '?'
The Internet, Email and Search Shortcuts work this way though, even though they were set automatically.
