Bug Description

The update manager currently requests password to check for updates.

Steps to reproduce:

System -> Administration -> Update Manager

Click "Check"

You will be prompted for authentication.

What should happen:

You should be able to "check" without escalation. Escalation should only occur when required, such as "Install" updates.

Thank you for your time.

When update-manager checks for updates, it downloads lists of packages and stores them for the package manager to use. If it did not do this, there would be no persistent memory of what happened during the check. That would be bad, because the lists can be large, and it takes a while to download them.

Storing the lists requires root priviledges. Because of this, you have to enter your password.

I have no problem storing a text document without root privileges. I might be ignorant of the inner workings of the update-manager, and please forgive me. I fail to see how this can not be accomplished in the same manner. I don't think it is a good idea to do a privilege escalation until absolutely *need*ed. Thank you for your time, Jon

If checking for updates is to require administrator privileges, the coherent behaviour
should be to ask for the password to open it directly. The fact that the update manager
can be launched but cannot be used is strange. I think this is an issue that may fit on the
"paper cut" list for the design team.

I'm not sure what a "paper cut" list is, is the where I need to place a request? Forgive my ignorance. Best, Jon

I remove the upstream task, one bugtask is enough. With the new aptdaemon backend this becomes feasible now.

I've tried recreating this bug with Ubuntu 11.04 and was unable to, given the information you've provided. Please either a) upgrade and test or b) increase the verbosity of the steps to recreate it so we can try again.

Please feel free to report any other bugs you may find.
