Bug Description

(with dapper - flight 5)

The installation halts right after loading the kernel if noapic is not passed to the kernel as an argument.

This is because of a buggy BIOS.

Sleep/hibernate also doesn't work, with or without noapic.

Would it be possible to blacklist this model? Entering noapic in grub isn't very obvious and likely to scare off new users.

If you need any information about this computer, please ask.

By the way, dapper is really nice! Thanks alot!

Note: the original reporter indicated the bug was in package 'linux-image'; however, that package was not published in Ubuntu.

quoting Matt Zimmerman from Bug #22727:

The kernel is capable of recognizing hardware which has such problems and
automatically disabling these features. Please attach the output from "lspci"
and "sudo dmidecode"

if you could provide the above info blacklisting should be possible

I still need noapic to boot with the new -20 kernel.

It seems that the behaviour with this change is to permit the kernel to boot with apic activated even when this buggy hardware is detected. Unfortunately, if I run my computer without the noapic-option, networking stops working after a while and if I use the accelerated nVidia-drivers, the graphics freezes too.

Is it possible to make the kernel behave as if noapic was passed to it if it detects this hardware?
