Bug Description

Description:
The help button doesn't work in gnome-about-me .

Steps to reproduce:
1. Start gnome-about-me
2. Press the Help button

Expected result:
Some friendly advice.

Actual result:
If launched via System -> Preferences -> About Me then nothing. If started from a terminal the following message appears:
Help goes here

Additional Information:
I guess it would be nicer if a dialog had been popped up or if the Help button wasn't there (but then again the help could have described why you might not be able to change your Full Name - http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=316699 )

seems it's not implemented yet.

In the meantime, can the button be simply removed as a temporary fix?

Here's a patch to the .glade file to hide the button ...

Remove the above, it doesn't work for some reason. Nevertheless, you get the idea :-)

Why dropping the feature rather than fixing it?

Vassilis Pandis (pandisv) wrote :

AFAIK from upstream comments, the problem is that there is no documentation to go with the Help button. So IMVHO it's better to hide the button until somebody writes up the documentation so that users don't click on it and wonder "why doesn't is show help". It's not a solution of course. It's a workaround until somebody writes the docs.

I agree better to remove the help button if there is not helptext available.

Users will wonder why it doesnot work!

Same problem with gnome-appearance-properties ... clicking the help button does not launch ghelp nor display anything else.
  System -> Preferences -> Appearance

I ran through the remaining applets in System -> Preferences and System -> Administration and the rest that have a help button all launch ghelp.

I suspect it would be better to spin off the gnome-appearance-properties issue into a bug of its own and post a link to to the new bug here.

Original issue is still here in Ubuntu 7.10:

Version information:
gnome-control-center 1:2.19.91-0ubuntu1

Surely this is a security issue as users might complete their personal details but have no information/guidance on how their details are accessed and how it is protected.

This has been resolved in Hardy. There is no longer a help button in the About Me dialog.
