Let's see if we can get this fixed, but I can't make the argument that we should slip our launch date for this.

Marking it invalid for the indicator applet as the patch only effects gnome-panel directly (and this won't get closed otherwise if it gets uploaded :) )

I think Ted's update to the patch will fix this, lets get confirmation that this is where we want the applet and push it in the gnome update next week.

Need to confirm that their is consensus among the design team regarding this. Then need to ensure that docs and marketing can take the change.

(09:18:21 AM) rickspencer3: mt logged this bug, apparantly he thinks the MI is installing in the wrong
(09:18:22 AM) rickspencer3: place
(09:18:44 AM) sabdfl: there is a special place in hell reserve for the designer of gnome-panel, in this regard
(09:18:54 AM) rickspencer3: hehe
(09:19:02 AM) rickspencer3: this is only on fresh installs, btw
(09:19:04 AM) sabdfl: mt probably isn't aware of the underlying mess
(09:19:09 AM) rickspencer3: not considering the upgrade case
(09:19:15 AM) sabdfl: the problem is that the notification area grows
(09:19:23 AM) sabdfl: and the panel would thus move icons around
(09:19:32 AM) rickspencer3: mm, right
(09:19:43 AM) sabdfl: and you end up with a messaging menu that's weirdly spaced to the left
(09:19:47 AM) sabdfl: if it's on the far left
(09:19:51 AM) sabdfl: i suspect that's why it's not
(09:20:05 AM) sabdfl: *perhaps* we should have done the messaging menu as a notification area bit
(09:20:14 AM) sabdfl: so that it would just drop itself into the list
(09:20:23 AM) rickspencer3: mm
(09:20:32 AM) rickspencer3: I know that everyone is on holiday
(09:20:38 AM) ted: We're not making that change for Jaunty! :)
(09:20:42 AM) rickspencer3: so I propose I mark the bug as invalid
(09:20:44 AM) sabdfl: heh, hi ted
(09:20:49 AM) sabdfl: wontfix
(09:21:01 AM) rickspencer3: we can follow up on Tuesday
(09:21:12 AM) rickspencer3: ack
(09:21:13 AM) sabdfl: also, the original rationale for it being on the left was because, originally, it would only appear when you had a message
(09:21:14 AM) rickspencer3: tx
(09:21:24 AM) sabdfl: we changed that, to accommodate buddy list revelation
(09:21:37 AM) rickspencer3: kenvandine ^^^^
(09:21:44 AM) sabdfl: and went down a whole different path (bi-state icon etc) that gets us to launchers in the messaging menu in 9.10 :-)
(09:21:51 AM) rickspencer3: okay
(09:22:05 AM) sabdfl: so i don't think we'll place it on the far left in the long run anyway
(09:22:19 AM) sabdfl: hmm... maybe copy this into the bug and say invalid

I appreciate technical reasons for not fixing the bug. Still I think that in the long run the MI should probably not seat between the volume/network/battery/date indicators. ATM the space to the left of these feels most natural, mainly because you're less likely to notice the icon state change if it's squeezed between two or three other icons. That said, I'm not implying it should be always on the far left. Subject for the separate discussion I guess.
