some of the triggering factors are...

1)opening synaptic

4)maximising deluge
etc...

Please test the mesa package here and see if it seems to make the freezes occur less often:

Thanks Mr Bryce!
I am testing the mesa package from your ppa.
Jaunty still hangs.
i had 3 hangs in the last 24 hrs...
1) opening a font in font preview
2)adding links to jdownloader
3) (unable to remember)

i think it is less frequent but still too frequent.

We have a PPA with some new tools for debugging X freezes:

  https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat/+archive/x-freeze-test

I know how irritating X freezes can be. They're also typically
quite hard to debug, but the information provided by these new
tools should help upstream figure them out.

You can help by doing the following:

 A. Install the PPA packages on Jaunty and boot kernel 2.6.30-rc2
 B. Reproduce your freeze
 C. ssh into the machine and run the steps to collect the info
 D. Attach the tarball of the results to this bug report

With this information, we'll be able to forward your bug upstream.

(For more information on triaging X freeze bugs, see
 https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/Freeze )

Followed instructions for installing the debugging tools (using kdm instead of gdm). I am *not* using the xserver-xorg-video-intel package from Bryce's ppa, using v. 2:2.6.3-0ubuntu9.

Have not experienced any freezes yet - running almost an hour now, freeze was happening within just a few minutes after running a fullscreen app before.

Anything I can do from here to help debug further? Any value in producing the debug tarball per instructions without the freeze happening?

Frozen after several hours w/ 2 apps in full screen mode. Attaching dri_debug tarball as instructed, minus kdm.log. My kdm.log file wound up being huge (6+ GB - yes, GB). If you want portions of it, please let me know and I'll attach or post snippets.

Is it possible that evtouch causes the freezes? (too)

I get no freezes when I use my touchpad, but when I use the touchscreen X crashes after a few minutes (or seconds) and I have to restart X with <alt>+<print>+<k>.

I also experienced freezes in kuki (aspire one distro, intrepid based) after I installed evtouch and no one else had freezes posted on this distro. (because they have no touchscreen?)
And evtouch is installed in Jaunty (UNR) anyway, right?

Settings:
Acer Aspire One modded with a touchscreen
UNR Jaunty
Sickboy's Kernel 2.6.29-1

I opened my news channel at www.woodtv.com and it immediately froze. I performed the xfreeze tests by shh
and then did a reboot with sudo shutdown -h now to the sick machine. since the original bug freeze after April 3rd
has been fixed or at least triaged i am trying to report this as a new or similar freeze issue.

This is a first. I rebooted and reached the desktop then opened my news channel www.woodtv.com it immediately
froze. I used RSEIUB to reboot, this means its repeatable on my issue. i did a apt-get dist-upgrade early this am.
I am attaching my dpkg.log
Up until this date and time i have not been getting crash's at least not this frequent and with the same action causeing
the freeze.

seems my freeze issue has gotten resolved with the installation of

as a curious note the glxgears jumped from around 500 to 1200, my penquin racer seems a bit faster with speeds of 85

As per wirechief's last comment, this seems to be gone in 2.7.0, which is uploaded to karmic (and a backport is available from x-updates).

wirechief's freeze using 2.7.99.1 was UXA related and possibly not relevant unless he had freezes in EXA also using 2.6.3 which he didn't make clear. Switching back to 2.7.0 changed him back to using EXA, I couldn't explain that well enough privately I guess.

relevant upstream bug for his UXA problem that doesn't happen in EXA -

switching from exa to uxa yesterday may 12th caused a freeze with
2.7.0 and since the time
i was able to finally visit www.woodtv.com with 2.70 i had not had
any issues so it seems that
uxa with my current configuration is certainly not workable without
freeze. exa works well.
