I sent this .desktop file to Debian BTS. Note that the file in the package is different than the one attached in this bug report, adding "Application" in the Categories field. However since the desktop-file-validate tool doesn't like "Application" there, I used the file attached in the bug report, i.e., the one only has "Categories=Education;Science;".

Hi Charles,

(I noticed that you sent the mail directly to ubuntu-science mailing
list. For bug related discussions, you probably want to honor the
Reply-To header and send the mail to Launchpad (as I did for this mail),
and ubuntu-science list will receive the mail from Launchpad
automatically.)

As I am reporting bugs to Debian, I am using a Debian unstable
environment, with /usr/bin/desktop-file-validate tool, from package
desktop-file-utils 0.11-1.

Good suggestion. However my main focus here is to report Ubuntu changes
to Debian, not the content of the changes. And as I don't know much
about desktop files myself, I can't really give an educated opinion. I
do know however, that in the current GNOME menu layout, adding "Math"
doesn't make any difference anyway, the menu entry will be in the
"Education" group in the menu (even the "Science" doesn't really do
anything).

I believe this category thing have been discussed before (either here or
ubuntu-motu list), if you are interested in improving the desktop files
in Ubuntu, feel free to read those discussions and raise new concerns.
