Bug Description

I use applications that draw themselves on the X root window, so i disable the "draw_background" key for gnome with gconf-editor. However, gnome *still continues to draw the background* and hides the window of the application drawing to the root of the screen. When disabling the draw_background, gnome must not draw anything (image or bgcolor) on the root window. I believe this worked correctly with standard gnome from gnome.org when i used it (at least for a previous version) so i think it is an ubuntu bug.

version: gnome 2.12.1 ubuntu breezy + official dapper backports
version: gnome 2.14.3 Ubuntu 6.06 LTS
note: still using my old ~/.gconf* from the breezy time

Thanks for your bug report. Which version of Ubuntu do you use now? Do you still have the problem?

#key seems reserved for folder view, but anyway:
$ gconftool -g /apps/nautilus/preferences/background_set
false

# key seems the key that is not taken in account.
$ gconftool -g /desktop/gnome/background/draw_background
false

how to repdoduce the bug:
$ xsetroot -solid wheat
#the background _does not change color to wheat_ but should.

$ killall -9 nautilus
# nautilus will be killed but restarted (i don"t know why)
# in the mean time (1 second), _we can see_ the
# original "wheat" color of the previous xsetroot command.
# then, nautilus re-draws his default color

Hope the info helps. i probaly misunderstood something...

That's not a bug, if you don't want to have nautilus managing the desktop you need to change /apps/nautilus/preferences/show_desktop

Ok, Ack. This is not a bug,
and folder drawing disapear in this condition.

so, explanation needed, if any:
What does mean the gconf key :
/desktop/gnome/background/draw_background

Explanation is told as (LANG=C)
Have GNOME draw the desktop background
Does it have any influence somewhere ?

thx

that key is used by the gnome-control-center, it should set the background image if the key is set to true
