Bug Description

Binary package hint: packagekit

This may be related to bug #342671, but my problem seemed different enough that I thought it should be reported separately. I am using kpackagekit version 0.4-0ubuntu8 on Kubuntu 9.04.

Bug description: I have noticed that the installation of many metapackages fails silently. KPackageKit never offers to download the dependencies, and then seems to go along with the package install with no indication that the package has actually failed to install. A quick glance at the package in the listing shows it hasn't been installed. I have noticed this behavior when trying to install kubuntu-restricted-extras, linux-rt and ubuntustudio-audio, so it should be easy to reproduce the problem by trying to install one of the aforementioned packages.

The only additional package repositories enabled on my system are the jaunty partner repos. I installed Kubuntu twice on my system just to make sure something didn't get borked, but the problem is reproducable the second time around. I have just been using apt-get to install everything.

I can verify this behavior. Sometimes kpackagekit simply fails to complete the install of a metapackage; other times it silently crashes. Apt-get has no problems installing the requested packages.

Here's the output from an attempt to install kubuntu-restricted extras. The steps were as follows:
1) Open kpackagekit.
2) Search for "kubuntu-restricted-extras".
3) Click the package to see the description of the package.
4) Click the Plus to mark the package.
5) Click Apply -- note that installation silently failed here.
6) Repeat steps 4 and 5 -- this time kpackagekit silently crashed.
