Bug Description

Binary package hint: compiz

I've recently upgraded to Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty. My graphics card is '01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon RV250 [Mobility FireGL 9000] (rev 02)'

Since upgrading, there has been a mysterious rectangle in the top right corner of my screen, below the clock.
It's transparent, showing the desktop through it, with a shadow as appears around windows.

It appears on boot, disappears when Visual Effects is turned off, and does not reappear when Visual Effects is turned back on -- But reappears after reboot.

In the attached screenshot, it looks as if it's associated with the panel - it's not. When the panel is moved out of the way, the rectangle persists -- it is unrelated to the panel.

It should be noted that this bug is not affected by Theme ...

in discussion on #ubuntu-bugs it was noted that after changing the theme to Human the rectangular box persists

It should also be noted that this bug was not present in 8.10 (Intrepid)

in discussion on #ubuntu-bugs it was noted that it has only been occurring since the user's machine was upgraded to 9.04 (Jaunty)

It should also be noted that the rectangle cannot be clicked, doesn't move at all.

When it is over the [X] close button of a full-screen window, the button cannot be clicked through this rectangle and so the window needs to be moved to be closed.

Probably the notifier applet. Dunno why it isn't displaying anything; perhaps macslow does?

Hi phileinsophia-gmail,

Thanks for including an image to demonstrate the issue. Could you also please attach the output of `lspci -vvnn`, and attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log or Xorg.0.log.old file from after reproducing this issue. If you've made any customizations to your /etc/X11/xorg.conf please attach that as well.

[This is an automated message. Apologies if it has reached you inappropriately; please just reply to this message indicating so.]

Is there a way we could look at the compiz configuration to determine if the cause of this problem is there?

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. The issue that you reported is one that should be reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release - Karmic Koala. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the next release of Ubuntu. You can find out more about the development release at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/. Thanks again and we appreciate your help.

Seems like the bug doesn't affect the 'ATI Technologies Inc Radeon RV250 [Mobility FireGL 9000] (rev 01)' - that's PCI-ID 1002:4c66. I have this graphics card & I've never seen this bug (in any Ubuntu version).

We haven't heard from the original complainant in a while ... should
we convert this to a question?

I'm sorry I've not replied in awhile - nothing has changed, it's still there. But whether it remains on the desktop or hovers in front of windows is a toss-up, where before it was always-on-top.

I've not made any changes to my /etc/X11/xorg.conf and, as for reproducing the issue, it appears when desktop effects are enabled at all (even if I turn all the effects off) and disappears when I disable desktop effects.

I haven't tried karmic yet as I've not had time, I'll have a go with the liveCD this weekend.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to look at all reported bugs in a timely manner. There have been many changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem may have been fixed with some of the updates. It would help us a lot if you could test it on a currently supported Ubuntu version. When you test it and it is still an issue, kindly upload the updated logs by running apport-collect <bug #> and any other logs that are relevant for this particular issue.
