Is your Ubuntu installation perhaps of the Wubi kind? The symptoms does look a lot like bug #199161.

Changed in memtest86+ (Ubuntu):
status: New → Incomplete

I downloaded from the Ubuntu site version 10 and installed within a WinXP
program. I'm not familiar with Wubi.

I updated of course, from within Ubuntu

The thing is that that sounds very much like Wubi.

http://wubi-installer.org/

Just to avoid any confusion, can you provide the link to the site where you downloaded this Ubuntu-from-Windows installer?

Could you please try being a bit more specific? Was this what you downloaded? http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/downloadmirrors#wubi Can you give me the name of the installer file you downloaded?

Andreas - I have found my downloaded disc and amongst the files thereon
there is indeed a wubi icon which brings up the interface that is
illustrated on the link you included.

Hope this helps sort out these problems. I like what I see so far but would
like to see it run properly before I could start suggesting it to my classes
and colleagues.

So what does all this mean? How does it help me have a working version of
Linux?

You have great potential with this software to usurp Microsoft and aid in
secure computing but having to be a 'geek' to understand anything is
suicidal.

Until you can make this truly a plug and play environment and provide
working patches for bugs then you aren't going to attract the audience you
seek. A great pity!
