Bug Description

"vbetools dpms off" works as it should and turns the screen off whereas "xset dpms off" blanks it with the backlight on...

to make things more confusing xscreensaver makes the screen completely white when blanking (if you choose blank as screensaver and then lock screen)

my laptop is an acer aspire 1644 with i810 video. happy to be of more assistance.
thanks

Can you check that your /etc/X11/xorg.conf references i810 rather than VESA?

i just checked with vesa as well. with vesa "xset dpms off" does not
work but vbetool works correctly.

with vesa the screensaver still becomes completely white when it is
supposed to blank.

so the problem appears to not be specific to i810 after all...

sorry to bother you again.
but i want to make sure that im filing this bug against the right package. from my last attempt with vesa it seems that the bug is with gnome-screensaver after all.

1, gnome-screensaver makes the screen comepletely white when it "locks the screen" (both with i810 and vesa)
2, when the screen is turned off with ''xset dpms off'' with i810 the backlight stays on. vbetool does the job correctly...

thanks

If xset dpms off doesn't turn the screen off, the bug is with X.

I have also this issue, using both dapper and edgy on an hp nx7400 and an Acer 5612wlmi (both with intel 950gma).
If I use vbesave dpms off the backlight goes off, with gnome-power-manager, xset dpms force off, the backlighy remains on.

The problem is present also using the failsafe terminal xsession. So it's not gnome-related...

the blacklight issue is happening when im resuming from a long idle time.
i've noticed that system is actually resuming , no blacklight & no keyboard/mouse too..

hard shutdown each time..

Still not fixed for me. When Xscreensaver tries to 'standby' after 10 minutes my screen backlight does not turn off - although I see an interesting pattern which kinda looks like a grid of transistors in bright white against the black background, so I suspect it is trying to turn off.

Could you please recheck it with Gutsy Final Live CD? In Gutsy i810 driver is deprecated and intel driver is used instead.

As per the last comment, I'm marking this fixed.

If anyone still experiences this same problem with the released version of Gutsy, feel free to reopen.

In my case the problem is with the S3 Savage (xserver-xorg-video-savage?) driver, so you can close this one and I'll hang on to some of the other reports of the same problem, such as bug 71368, bug 117836, bug 140644 and 158022.
