amarok only supports gstreamer 0.8 which is obsolete, we need to wait for gstreamer 0.10 support.

you need the amarok-gstreamer package which (probably for the reason above) is not available in the dapper repos. If you compile amarok1.4beta2 from source, you can get gstreamer0.10 support, but you need to install a lot of development packages to get all the features to compile.

Is there any chance of amarok 1.4 with gstreamer0.10 support getting into dapper, even if it's beta?

if it does not get in, i suggest the following:

at the selection box where you can chose the backend, enter all possible backends, even if they are not installed. but the ones that are not installed are grayed out. then you write clearly gstreamer-0.8.
Like that people will know why they cant chose gstreamer.

Debian (and ubuntu) have stopped shipping amarok-gstreamer, and are no longer supporting it (on edgy, at least)

amarok (1.4.0-1) unstable; urgency=low

  * New upstream release. The upstream tarball no longer ships the GStreamer
engine, and aRts support was dropped a while ago, and this upload only
    includes the XINE engine.
