Repackage asoundconf (via asoundconf and asoundconf-ui) (asoundconf script has been removed from alsa-utils)

As the original developer of this package, I support the move: it's also particularly difficult to support, as configurations where the user has used it, and also uses PulseAudio (which supersedes it, to an extent), can become overly complex.

Hm - Dan Chen suggested that I merge asoundconf into the asoundconf-gtk package, which seems a more elegant solution. I'd like to consider that before the package is removed.

I've decided that the best course of action looks to be that asoundconf-gtk is removed from Karmic, and I prepare a package for Debian, source name `asoundconf` that includes the original asoundconf script, and asoundconf-ui[1]. This would supersede asoundconf-gtk, producing binaries for gtk (asoundconf-gtk) and qt (asoundconf-qt). asoundconf-ui currently provides infrastructure for qt3, but I'm not sure whether to include that. Jordi Mallach doesn't think this is too bad an idea, but I've subscribed the ubuntu-audio team to get their opinion. Hopefully the Debian package should be published before FeatureFreeze, and that can just be simply synced over.

I'm lost without asoundconf.
I don't use pulseaudio at all and I must set the default alsa soundcard to an expresscard.
I use speech recognition software running on wine.... both of these need to know the default sound card, and neither works optimally with pulseaudio.
I also use UbuntuStudio with the real-time kernel.

Very hard for this configuration, where what's wanted is only one sort of sound (and that's only incoming), but wants the lowest latency and simplest configuration possible.

Hi Susan, I'll try and get a package in my PPA within a week or so, but I've been rather busy at the moment. I hope you find a short-term solution.

Well, my short-term solution has been to downgrade to Jaunty's alsa-utils, run asoundconf, and then let alsa-utils be upgraded again. But I think it's been messing with my system. On a clean install it works, but then on the second or third time I use it, I start getting timeout errors. Basically, on my program, that means that the sound card is being recognized, but not properly.

I wouldn't suggest that as a work-around. What you could do is copy
the script from /usr/bin/asoundconf into /usr/local/bin/asoundconf,
and keep the asoundconf-gtk package installed until I get around to
patching this up. Then, you can upgrade the alsa-utils package as it
should be. Beware, though, that using asoundconf after it has been
removed is an unsupported configuration, and so things like pulseaudio
may be picky. However, I'm not aware of how the current pulse
configuration works, so that warning is just due to my own caution.

This is still a bug in Lucid.

On my system, sound is just plain broken without asoundconf. Lucky, I had an old .asoundrc.asoundconf lying around ... (I'm using external USB speakers.)

I fail to see how providing asoundconf is any worse than having no sound at all.

@ralphb: setting back to Incomplete, this is waiting for feedback from ubuntu-audio.

It has been a long time since I've thought anything about asoundconf, so it's just false to have me as the assignee for this bug. I recommend that asoundconf-gtk be removed; it has been broken for a long time now, and its last upload was almost five years ago.
