Notifier hangs after long period of use

Bug Description

If I leave the notifier tray icon running for 2 days or so (checking every minute), it will hang, leaving a blank icon spot in the system tray. I'm guessing it somehow lost contact with GMail and instead of a graceful recovery it stalls the UI.

Perhaps this is really an upstream design problem...

I get the same, but it happens after a couple of hours. Gmail-notify shows up in system monitor, but no tray icon.

Uptime today: 11:13, and gmail-notify has quit twice.

I can lose it if I run an app that requires a password that uses the screen grab function.

Also disappears while changing themes.

When it disappears for me it usually comes back at some point. Still a bug but I couldn't find the "logic" behind this behaviour.

I noticed the same problem. I started gmail-notify in the terminal and it seems that the tray icon does not refresh while it is trying to connect. Hence if it can't connect the icon doesn't get redrawn for a plausibly very long time. Mine generally comes back after a while but its annoying.

Happens consistently if gmail-notify can't connect.

Mine runs fine then on screen refresh wallpaper change,Beryl, etc Sometimes
just disappears slot is there but no icon or right click options. Never
noticed if it comes back after hours?

Using checkgmail instead it has it's own bugs. Like cannot click on link
features to mark,delete,etc... But does notify and click on it takes me to
my account and does not disappear.

I confirm this, happens to me also in Xubuntu gutsy

the system tray icon disappears and a blank space will fill in its place. that happens mostly after i add some other items to the system tray, or when i check the options of any application thats already in the system tray.

the blank space can be removed by removing the system tray from the panel and adding it again, that way will insure keeping your system tray organized and "blank space" free without the need to restart.

Is this symptom still reproducible in 8.10 alpha?
