Bug Description

SO version: karmic koala alpha1, kernel 2.6.30-5-generic
Notebook: HP530, IBM ThinkPad T42, HEDY v510

After an upgrade from 9.04 to 9.10 Alpha 1, the touch-to-click functionality of the touchpad doesn't work anymore, even though the "Enable mouse click with touchpad" options is checked in mouse preferences.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Upgrade to 9.10
2. Move the mouse cursor to any menu
3. Tap on the touchpad

Expected result:
The menu should open as if the left mouse button had been clicked.

Actual result:
The menu does not open.

This is almost certainly related to the following entry in xserver-xorg-input-synaptics' debian/NEWS file:

xserver-xorg-input-synaptics (1.1.1~git20090510-1) unstable; urgency=low

  * Tapping has been disabled by default on many touchpads by upstream, see
    the "NOTES" section in the synaptics(4) manpage for a short overview
    about how defaults are calculated.
    If you want to re-enable it, you can do so from within the X
    environment by running the following commands in a terminal:

        $ synclient TapButton1=1
        $ synclient TapButton2=2
        $ synclient TapButton3=3

    Note that the configuration will not be permanently modified, to do
    so assign the above option values in your xorg.conf or custom fdi file
    (see the synaptics(4) manpage or the documents in
    /usr/share/doc/xserver-xorg-input-synaptics for additional details).
    Another alternative is to use desktop environment specific tools
    like gpointing-device-settings or touchfreeze.

Note that the gnome-control-center task exists to represent the need to assess whether gnome-mouse-properties needs changes to integrate nicely with the synaptics change mentionned above.

Hello Everybody,

I confirm you the solution from Max Bowsher it is working fine in my laptop Dell Inspiron 1420. However I don't know why my xorg.conf file is blank, I need put here the new configuration for my touchpad, but it is empty.

Somebody knows about the new changes in Karmic Koala for why the xorg.conf file it is empty?

Best Regards,

Francisco Barrientos
