I made similar observations. My system is Intel 32 bit.

I decided to upgrade from 8.04 to 9.04 . For this I ran first the upgrade to 8.10 and than the upgrade to 9.04. I didn't have a look at the 8.10 system because I was keen on the 9.04 system so I started the upgrade to 9.04 just after the reboot after upgrade to 8.10.

Than I discovered that slapd wasn't installed in my 9.04 althoug it was in my 8.04 where it worked properly.

Than I tried to install slapd with synaptic and the error occured.

Could you provide the output of the following two commands:

 * ls -l /var/backups/

 * ls -l /var/backups/slapd-*/

  Loading from /var/backups/slapd-2.4.11-0ubuntu6.1:

Loading the database from the LDIF dump failed with the following
error while running slapadd:
    /var/backups/slapd-2.4.11-0ubuntu6.1/dc=local.ldif: No such file or directory
dpkg: Fehler beim Bearbeiten von slapd (--configure):

It seems that the database dump has been done.

Could you post the complete apt terminal log files of the upgrade? Especially the message related to the preinst script (which should say whether the database has been dumped).

Dear Mathias,

where do I find these files (the complete apt terminal log files of the upgrade)?

Hi Mathias,

They should be available in /var/log/apt.

I want you to save download and unpack six term.log.?.gz files so I typed

cd /var/log/apt
sudo zcat $(ls -tr *.gz)>~/term.log

and apended the result.
