Errr, and then I redid the update and it seems to have worked.

invoke-rc.d returned 1
There is a MySQL server running, but we failed in our attempts to stop it.
Stop it yourself and try again!

Could you post the content of /var/log/daemon.log around the time of the upgrade to identify why mysqld has failed to be stopped?
