Bug Description

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

I am using Ubuntu Linux 9.04 (Jaunty), with Open Office 3.0.1 OOO300m15 (Build:9379).

I was excited to see that I should be able to open Mathtype Equations with Open Office Maths (since I have Load and Save enabled for Mathtype in Options - Load/Save- Microsoft Office) as I have a large number of Word Documents that contain Mathtype Equations. Unfortunately, whenever I open a Word Document, and attempt to open a Mathtype Equation, Open Office reports a 'General Error'.

I have been using Microsoft Office and Mathtype for many years, so it is very difficult for me to say with which version of Office and Mathtype any particular document was created with, or subsequently modified by, but when I last used Microsoft Office it was Office 2007, with Mathtype 6.5c.

Thanks for the document. This appears to also happen in both official OOo 3.1 and dev300 m49 (OOo 3.2).

I'm having the same problem, but I can see the objects created with MathType qith some bad symbols, but i can't edit them, because the program says "General error".
In some .doc files I can't even see the equations.

I am not a developer, just a maths teacher... but i want to contribute with this cause, we need create a way to editing objects created in MathType from OpenOffice... How could I help?

Regards

I still experience this error on Kubuntu 9.04+OOo 3.1.1 (as I had on all previous versions of OOo).

The quality of equation import did not change significantly since I started using OOo (2.* versions). Some equations are imported correctly (only very simple ones), some have wrong sizes (stretched horizontally, for example), some are shifted (no correct baseline alignment, this problem is almost universal) or surrounded by excess margins (this problem seems to be at least partially solved in v3.1.1), some cannot be opened because of the 'General error' mentioned above. In the same time all these equations are displayed and opened for editing correctly in MS Word+Equation/MathType. This allows one to conclude that the OLE objects are not damaged.

Averagely complicated formulas are imported from Equation/MathType to OOo incorrectly: they cannot be correctly read and cannot be edited. Typical problems include:

1. integral sign and its limits
2. sum (sigma) sign and its limits
3. miscellaneous subscripts, superscripts and sings above the variable letter (hats, dots, tildas and so on). Only subscripts and superscripts which contain only digits or Latin letters are imported (rather often) correctly. For example, I have never seen a correctly imported formula like {\tilde\pi}_1^+ (latex equivalent). This formula can be easily created in both MS Equation/MathType and in OOo Math. But it cannot be imported from MS Equation to OOo Math.
4. square and figure brackets including those ones used to type a system of equations

This behavior limits OpenOffice applicability to create scientific articles for those journals and conferences which require Microsoft Word format. One can argue that contemporary organizations (publishers, conference committees, etc.) should not insist on using proprietary formats, but many still do and this is our reality.

For the same reason it is also almost impossible to use OpenOffice to read scientific articles created earlier in Microsoft Word.

Is it possible to expect any fixes in the nearest time or any comment or recommendations?

What I did not try yet:
1. Matrices
2. Export from OOo Writer+Math to MS Word+Equation/Mathtype
I cat comment nothing on this functionality.

Its fixed in OOo 3.2 which may be in Ubuntu 10.04, so yes you still see this bug in Ubuntu Karmic...

Notice no crash and the formulas display as expected. Does this work for you?

Hi,

I'm afraid I can't answer your question, because I gave up on Microsoft
Office and Mathtype under Linux a long time ago, and went through an
exercise of converting all my relevant documents with embedded Equations
to run with Open Office (now Libre Office), using Math.

I had almost forgotten about this bug. Sorry!

Alan.

There are no new official OpenOffice.org releases in Ubuntu packaging anymore => Won't Fix

If the problem persists, please mark this bug as "also affects project Libreoffice" or "also affects distribution Libreoffice (Ubuntu)" if that has not happened already.

Please leave references to upstream OpenOffice.org bugs in place to allow cross pollination.
