Bug Description

After GDM loads, the lovely Ubuntu brown appears briefly with small central box filled with a micro green 'mattrix-like' fill before going to a snowwhite GDM login screen. On the login screen, the matrix blob is still present and slight variation in white is present where the login box is. Typing blindly, no characters appear on screen, I can enter the desktop. The splash screen shows the green matrix over that part that is used for the splach graphic. Within I am presented two grey bars top and bottom, no icons and no text and that central matirx blob. Once the background graphic appears it is represented by the green matrix filling the space between the bars. I can see shape of the update notification appear, again without text or icons. After screen blanks, screensaver, the background behind the bars is black. Also vnc to the desktops is just black, I had vino enabled from breezy.

This is an improvement over time Flight 6 just gave a black screen after GDM load. I have read just about every ATI related thing on the net. I have tried combinations of modules and changed the device type amongst the three main types, ati, radeon, and fglrx. All give the same results. vesa does not work at all.

I will send attachments later xorg log and xorg config.

Thanks for your bug report. I want to know if you tried reconfiguring xserver-xorg from tty. If not, can you do this, if it still persists, yes, plese upload the necessary info needed.

Yes, I used dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg and aticonfig both. I also
attempted to edit xorg.conf with pico disabling modules, certain
modules, et al... nothing seemed to make difference except the update
Wednesday which turned things into the 'matrix'.

I notice you mention fglrx briefly in your initial post. Can you try "dpkg --purge xorg-driver-fglrx" and THEN "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg" and pick "ati"?

Then reboot completely to clear any scary DRM madness that the kernel may have loaded.

(you might even try a cold power off and on, to make sure the video card doesn't have some messed up registers that just deperately need a reset)

Thanks for the suggestion... It only changed the green 'matrix' to a
more rainbow hue. :( I only tried fglrx cause when I started to try and
put DAPPER on this machine... only fglrx gave some visual.

I tried the 4-6 daily build and there is no visuals???? But I have
partly visuals with aforementioned artifacts now with DAPPER from net
updates... I have yet to locate any linux live cd with XORG7.0 that will
boot into gdm...

hmmmm, I have an update of sorts. I was rummaging in the closet and
found an old ati all-wonder card put it in the computer and *boom* the
GUI came up. I also found the out the card in question is a Diamond
Stealth S80 featuring Radeon 9200se. Not sure if this is something or
not. So, I consider this card a NO-NO for Dapper at this point.

Can you please test Dapper Beta2 livecd or the latest daily and let us know? a lot of bug fixes have been done in the ati driver.

Thanks
Fabio

No action in 9 months, sounds like something that is fixed in later ati driver releases because no other similar reports have been seen. Reopen if this still happens.
