I can confirm this - the xrandr plugin is failing:

** (gnome-settings-daemon:4379): WARNING **: /usr/lib/gnome-settings-daemon-2.0/libxrandr.so: undefined symbol: gnome_rr_screen_get_timestamps

This symbol only exists in GIT versions of gnome-destkop. Anyhow, gnome-settings-daemon should check for a newer version of gnome-desktop in configure, so I reported this upstream.

Confirming it's only a gnome-settings-daemon problem.
Until it gets fixed, a workarround is to run xrandr manually.

For example: to have a VGA left of the main LCD laptop panel run this:
$ xrandr --output LVDS --auto --output VGA --auto --left-of LVDS

I just started getting this in Jaunty, after an auto-update which I believe included a kernel update.

Not sure if this is a known bug in Jaunty, too, and/or if Jaunty's got its own issue associated with it.

Two things.

1. My problem was seemingly temporary, as a reboot fixed the problem.
2. I was advised that even if I do experience the problem again, I should report it in its own bug, as mine is different release of Ubuntu.

So, continue to disregard my comments. ;-)

My problem is back (in Jaunty), and I've filed Bug 397455 for it. Just thought I'd close the loop here, and won't comment here again... Thanks.
