Bug Description

I tried to extract a .rar archive, but I got the "unkown file format message". I then installed 'unrar-free'. It works OK from the command line, but .rar files still go as unrecognised formats as far as file-roller is concerned.

Dapper drake, file-roller 2.14.0-0ubuntu1, unrar-free 1:0.0.1-2

For that to work you need the 'rar' package from multiverse.

Yes, I know about rar. But according to http://packages.debian.org/changelogs/pool/non-free/u/unrar-nonfree/unrar-nonfree_3.5.4-1/unrar.copyright rar is not free. While it is true that it is quite superior to unrar-free , I do not think that file-roller should only use rar. I don't know how file-roller handles the application choice, but I don't see why one would have to resort to the CLI because they chose to use a free package.

Ideal situation:
If unrar-free is present and unrar is not, then file-roller should use unrar-free.

If rar is present but unrar-free is not, use rar.

If unrar-free and unrar are present, ask which to use. Maybe with 'rar' being the default choice.

I think what I'm saying is quite reasonable, so I would appreciate it if this bug stayed open.

Reopening. If somebody wants to work on that he's welcome, that's not a priority for dapper though

I've just tried opening a random rar I've got from the net. It works with unrar and rar-nonfree, but not with only rar-free. However, it may have been just an unsupported version of file.

It can be solved by creating a symbol link
  cd /usr/bin/
  sudo ln -s unrar-free unrar
However I hope the file-roller's maintainer to solve it
