Bug Description

To reproduce :

1. open 2 windows of Nautilus for example
2. Place the second one on the first : the Nautilus "folder listing" area is hidden
3. Try to drag a file from the focused window to the hidden : you can't

What should append :

By targeting a window in D&D mode, it should be brang back automatically at the top of the desktop to allow Drop.

Cordially

Thank you for bringing this bug to our attention. Unfortunately a paper cut should be a small usability issue that affects many people and is quick and easy to fix. I'm afraid this bug can't be addressed as part of this project.

This is more of a feature request , and not an easy one too. Therefore this is not a papercut.

A paper cut is a minor usability annoyance that an average user would encounter on his/her first day of using a new installation of Ubuntu 9.10.

For further info about papercuts criteria , pls read > https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PaperCut

Don't worry though, This bug has been marked as "invalid" ONLY in the papercuts project.
For resolution of the bug, kindly identify the projects affected and assign the bug to that project, otherwise the devs of the concerned project might not be notified of this problem.

This issue is general one, and affects every GUI app.

I experienced the same usability problems with Thunderbird:

Goal: Drag'n'Drop and old email as an attachment to a new one.

How it should be done:
* press "New" to create new email, write there what you need.
* go to main thunderbird window
* search needed old email there, press and hold mouse on it
* if new-email-window is visible by any of it's sides or corners, then move mouse on it (dragging old email with it)
** it should change the focus on new-email-window
** move mouse to attachment's area (top-right corner) and drop the dragging object.
* if new-email-window is hidden (fully covered by other windows), then press Alt-Tab several times to find it (still pressing the mouse button)
** when window is found, it gains a focus
** move mouse to needed area and drop the object.

Currently both of ways (give focus by alt-tab or mouse move with pressed button) are not working now.

The only workaround I found is to mark new-email-window always-on-top for the time range when I need to drag-and-drop object on it.

I added Thunderbird project to this bug, because the usage pattern I described is a quite common for me, and I need this resolved!
But as jac3n described, it affects almost every application.

Thanks.

I added 2 more clues on what to be fixed (Alt-tab or mouse move), and now it's not "that big" feature request and can be nominated to "100 paper cuts"

Sorry, I've been away for a while from Linux systems.
Seems that we've misunderstood each other about the "patch".
I only proposed the way to solve the problem, with out doing actual patch - I simply don't know how to do the one :)

If you point me on the doc page describing the process of doing the patch, patching, and testing the patched system, I'd be glad to try to follow it.

Thanks!

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. A new version of Nautilus is available on Maverick and we are wondering if this bug is still an issue for you with that version? Could you please test and comment back? Thanks in advance.
