Bug Description

Recently I've starting having this trouble with my wireless card with some wireless networks. At some point while being connected, syslog starts filling up with tons of messages about errors issuing commands. It doesn't seem to happen when I'm plugged in to the network with a cable.

When this happens, my laptop starts to crawl and eventually stops responding to about everything except mouse movements (the cursor will jump positions every couple minutes). I can't even get mouse clicks to appear to do anything. Keyboard actions don't seem to work either (neither alt-tab nor ctrl-alt-F1).

My laptop has a minipci orinoco_pci wireless card (and an e100 wired card). I use NetworkManager to handle all my network connections.

Here are a few entries from syslog that were left there from the last time this happened.

Is this with latest dapper kernel (-20)?

Yes, I've been using -20 for some time now.

Mine does the same thing (and did so under Breezy). It seems to happen more often (although I think i've seen it do it on its own) when the interface is in promiscuous mode, for example when using Airsnort or similar utilities. My laptop uses an Intersil Corporation Prism 2.5 Wavelan chipset, with the orinoco_pci / hermes driver. It's happened with a variety of different kernels. I doubt the problem is specific to Ubuntu though.

Jack, have you seen this with the -21 kernel? I'm not sure I'm seeing it anymore. It only occured when I was using my school's wireless, and I was able to use it all day today without any hiccups. I'll continue testing this week, hoping for no more recurrences.

BTW: Jack, you might consider using the hostap drivers instead of the orinoco drivers.

I still get this with the -22 kernel. As a workaround, I use the hostap driver, after disabling the orinoco drivers as mentioned in bug #41652

Launchpad Janitor (janitor) wrote : This bug is now reported against the 'linux' package

Beginning with the Hardy Heron 8.04 development cycle, all open Ubuntu kernel bugs need to be reported against the "linux" kernel package. We are automatically migrating this linux-source-2.6.15 kernel bug to the new "linux" package. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we make this transition. Also, if you would be interested in testing the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release, it is available at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . Please let us know your results. Thanks!

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

I would except I no longer use the laptop / wireless card combination
that this issue originated on. :)
