Bug Description

Binary package hint: firefox-3.5

I use middle-click on links to open them in new tabs. Since I installed the Firefox 3.5 packages recently, using middle-click opens _two_ tabs, both with the same content (i.e. the content of the link).

If instead one right-clicks on the link and selects "Open in new tab", the correct (single tab) behaviour is observed.

This is version: Firefox 3.5 (Shiretoko) version Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.1b4pre) Gecko/20090401 Ubuntu/9.04 (jaunty) Shiretoko/3.5b4pre running on Jaunty i386.

The above behaviour happens with a clean profile.

I can confirm the issue for firefox 3.5 in karmic.
It doesn't always happen when I middle-click a link, but it does quite frequently.

do you have any extensions installed? try to disable them one by one; most likely you can identify an extension that causes this. Let us know.

Just updated packages this evening and now have:

Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.1) Gecko/20090701 Ubuntu/9.04 (jaunty) Shiretoko/3.5

The problem seems no longer to occur.

asac: For what it's worth, there were no extensions installed - I tested using a fresh profile. There may have been the various Ubuntu-related packaged extensions, but no user-installed ones.

You can consider this bug as Gone Away, at least from my perspective. I'll comment again here if it Comes Back :-)

I tried to reproduce this bug right after turning on the PC today, but everything worked fine, both with adblock enabled and disabled (no other addons).

A few hours of uptime later the bug seems to have slowly reappeared.
Affected sites so far: Launchpad (when opening many bug reports in tabs) and sites with flash usage (multiple youtube video tabs; multiple tabs of a message board with flash ads)

My first suspicion was high CPU load, but running CPUburn doesn't increase the frequency of the bug.

This time it has happened on a regular site (no flash, no https; http://www.411mania.com/wrestling/ ).
Five or six times in a row, middle clicks opened two new tabs. But directly afterwards, I was unable to reproduce the bug.

I've checked dmesg. There is nothing supicious.

However, maybe the bug is (at least partially) influenced by CPU load. All the time there was an ffmpeg process in the background, transcoding video.

I got the same problem.

Completely new profile.
No extensions.
Ubuntu Karmic 64bit
Firefox 3.5 Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.9.1.2) Gecko/20090810 Ubuntu/9.10 (karmic) Firefox/3.5.2

Just clicking any link on any page (including this) with middle button makes two (sometimes three) new tabs appear.
I don't see any pattern... most of the times two new tabs appear, rarely works well.

I actually experienced this on http://pidgin.im clicking the about tab on top. I'll try to narrow down a test case later.

I also just started getting this. I can't see any patterns with websites, and it occurs whether or not my plugins (ABP, Noscript, firegpg, flashgot, torbutton) are enabled or disabled. A new user account also had the same problem.

This is on karmic, 2.6.2.6.31-14-generic, and firefox 3.5.4.

Hmmmmm, just then, pasting the output of uname -r into here (select, then middle-click in the text box) pasted the info twice... and pasting into another application in the same way sometimes pastes twice. I don't think this is a bug in firefox.

edit: Does anyone know what handles mouse events (or rather middle clicks) in ubuntu?

Sorry to bump this again, but it seems the root cause is the same for bug #370855 ( https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-terminal/+bug/370855 ) but there has been no activity on that (or anything else I can find) for quite a while.

I've experienced the same issue with both firefox and google chrome when opening tabs, and in gedit when pasting text.
I think this is probably a mouse driver or kernel issue

Using the same logitech mouse, firefox 3.5 in karmic and XP both pops up multiple tabs on a middle click, but as soon as I changed the mouse, everything works normally.

Can someone else please confirm that that bug disappears using a different mouse.

I'm experiencing similar issues.

Ubuntu 8.10 amd64
Firefox (Shiretoko) 3.5.8pre

I generally ctl-click to open a link in a new tab. After populating a few tabs, I can not switch to a tab by clicking on it; however I can close that tab by clicking the "x" on that tab. I can switch and view tabs using alt-(number), and I can switch windows with alt-tab. Ctl-w successfully closes the active tab.

With multiple browser windows open on multiple workspaces (I use 4 workspaces), selecting a bookmark in one browser window opens that link in a different browser window (sometimes in a different workspace). The target window into which the link opens changes if I try opening that bookmark from a different window.

Unlike the original reporter, I haven't experienced middle-click opening two tabs.

It seems that Firefox is having trouble keeping track of which window and tab is which, and sometimes forgets that other tabs even exist.
