Hi, can you give more information on what you did and if you can reproduce the error?

I'm afraid I can't give much more info. This happened overnight when the machine was running unattended, and the machine had crashed when I got to it in the morning. There's nothing in syslog for the previous 5 hours. There are some basic things that run overnight, like fetchmail, ntpdate, logcheck, and smartmontools does a short check of one of the disks at around 3.00 (it reports the disk is OK)

FWIW, I'm finding that the generic kernel seems to offer more stability than the K8 one (even though I have a dual opteron). I'm using the former again right now.
