Bug Description

System : Dell Latitude D810, Karmic with latest updates as of now.
The system freezes rather frequently when either plugging/unplugging the DC adapter, or resuming from suspend. When frozen, the HDD led stays lit.

* When the freeze occurs after resuming from suspend, it often results in a hard lock (magic SysReq keys have no effect). Sometimes, though, it just freezes for around 30s-1min, and then unfreezes. In these cases, pressing the caps lock/num lock keys correclty affect the indicator leds. In these cases, I usually find messages like this in the syslog:

Jul 13 17:15:36 tadzim kernel: [ 4025.000165] ata1.00: exception Emask 0x0 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x0 action 0x6 frozen

Jul 13 17:15:46 tadzim kernel: [ 4035.206746] ata1: EH complete

* When the freeze occurs when plugging in the DC adapter, parts the desktop are responsive, apps that are already loaded continue working, however anything that involves disk activity hangs. Today I had a console open when it occurred, and I got these results:
- dmesg yields a Bus Error
- hdparm --verbose /dev/sda gives this (I took a picture of the screen and transcribe it here...):

/de/sda

Note that these problems also occured with Jaunty, but less frequently it seems. Please tell me how I can help debugging it.

With recent karmic updates, freeze sometimes also occur when booting, before Xorg starts.

Hi gpothier,

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 399054

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.
