Bug Description

ksynaptics, a nice gui to configure the synaptics touchpad-driver needs at least version 0.14.4

Please update this package so that kubuntu users can configure their touchpad this was. This would be very nice...

Thanks in advance

I confirm, I've been waiting long for the new (or consistent with ksynaptics) package of the touchpad driver.

There is a synaptics driver in the universe repository by Mattia Dongili that is 0.14.4, but it removes the old driver (good) but ksynaptics relies on the old one (bad)

ksynaptics is maintained by https://launchpad.net/people/aquette
looks like a lack of communication, please fix this before dapper goes final, ksynaptics is just to handy ...

Why does ksynaptics rely on a newer version of the driver? synaptics upgrades tend to break things randomly so we're not likely to upgrade it now. It shouldn't be difficult to get ksynaptics working with 0.14.3.

On the ksynaptics homepage it is stated that it needs atleast the synaptics library 0.14.4, but that's for the uptodate version of ksynaptics (0.3.1), not 0.2.4 which is in the universe repository (I overread this part too ... :-/)

Well guess it'd be the best to keep the old one for now, even though changes in ksynaptics doesn't modify the settings of the touchpad, thus is useless for me

Ok, there's no issue with xserver-xorg-input-synaptics here in that case.

I need to redraw my last statement ...

after retrying ksynaptics (and doing all the settings in xorg.conf) and still no success, I've seen in ksynaptics that it requires version 0.14.4 (stated right under the tabs in the control center with the module touchpad open)

Checking the changelog for 0.14.4, there's nothing in there that ksynaptic actually needs - since we'll only be shipping 0.14.3, it's perfectly acceptable to hack it to treat the driver as 0.14.4. We won't be upgrading the driver for dapper.

I can confirm that this is an issue still in the latest Dapper with the latest ksynaptics package and synaptics driver. It appears that the problem is that ksynaptics requires a later driver than ubuntu provides and therefore cannot actually control the touchpad. I would love to have this working as I would love to have a way to turn off the touchpad on my laptop so I don't continually hit it while typing.

Likewise, I can confirm this is still an issue.
